Memory of Departure

This print series captures a poignant portrait of dementia, its effect on the slow corrosion of the patient’s identity. This is based on a personal account of witnessing the degenerative effects of dementia on my dearest grandmother.

By utilizing a monotype printing technique, I was able to create portraits that are raw and intimate. With my immediate emotions put down directly onto the printing plate, it is an act of reconciliation with feelings of helplessness from the times I tried to reach out to someone so familiar yet incredibly distant.

By combining monotype with collagraph print technique, I am able to add another dimension to this body of work, drawing viewers inward to experience the mental turmoil a dementia patient has to confront on a daily basis.

In this series of portraits, parts of my grandmother’s face remains familiar, while some are hazy, distorted, and heartbreaking.
